Tips To Overcome Home Sickness While Working Abroad

Home sickness is defined as distress caused by separation from a specific home environment. Students who join universities and colleges or those who go abroad are affected by homesickness. As they are exposed to different environments and new people they are sometimes overcome by homesickness. Some students don't get homesick, but there are others who are overwhelmed by the new experience. The main signs and symptoms of homesickness are: Nostalgia, grief, depression, anxiety, topophilia, adjustment disorders, withdrawal, sadness, claustrophobia, and agoraphobia. Homesickness is felt more by the people who are furthest from home for example international volunteers, international students, international workers and expats. Homesickness can strike at any moment, one week into the volunteer work abroad or a month later. It's natural for volunteers to become homesick as they are many miles away from home and they can't go back as soon as they want.

Here are a couple of remedies to homesickness:

1.  Keep in touch.  Keeping in touch with family and old friends who are at home, is one of way of keeping homesickness at bay. The volunteers can use the following to keep in touch: emails, Skype, Facebook, Tweeter, calling and texting. Most of these resources are available in many parts of the world unless the volunteer is in remote areas. The quality of the resources varies depending on the location of the volunteer for example the speed and availability of internet. When feeling lonely and homesick the volunteer could try and communicate with those who are back at home. Talking to them will lift up the spirits of the volunteers. Finding out things that are going on at home will help the volunteer feel connected to their families.

2.  Carry something from home. Carrying something from home could help the volunteer overcome homesickness. Carry things that have some sentimental value and could remind the volunteer of home. The volunteer can carry developed photos, a pillow from home, perfume or cologne of a loved one, favorite movies, music, stuffed animals and an old scrapbook. Having these familiar things will make the place where the volunteer is staying more comfortable. These small mementos remind the volunteers about home and make him or her happy.

3.  Make friends.  Making new friends is a great way to get over homesickness. While the volunteer is abroad, s/he should make friends with the local people and other volunteers. As there will be other volunteers working with them, they will help to adjust to the new environment. The other volunteers will help to form a support network whereby they will help solve common problems. The volunteer will be able to talk about his or her feelings about missing home and the others will help them. The other volunteers will cheer up the homesick volunteer. Constantly meeting new people will take the volunteers mind away from home and help to embrace the new environment. Meeting new people will help to fit into the new culture. Spending time with other people cures homesickness.

4.  Keep busy.  Volunteers feel homesick the most when they are idle. When they feel homesick the volunteer should look for activities to keep their minds engaged. The volunteers should focus on the volunteer abroad work and look for ways to be more productive. They could stick to a schedule that keeps their minds occupied. When the volunteers are not working, they look for other interests and hobbies that will keep them busy. They should try to keep up with their hobbies while they are abroad. They should take this opportunity to make the most of their stay by visiting new places and finding out new experiences. The busier the volunteer is the less time s/he will be feel homesick.

OFW Accuses Philippine Embassy Of Neglect

After spending 10 months in a Saudi Arabian prison, suffering a miscarriage behind bars, and enduring 150 lashes for acts of immorality which she maintains she never committed, overseas Filipino worker Clarissa (not her real name) has finally come home.

Clarissa arrived Thursday in the Philippines after serving her sentence for “immorality" for getting pregnant out of wedlock, a crime under Shari’ah law. Married with three kids, she was accused of having had an illicit affair with a co-worker.

However, Clarissa claims she was raped and that Philippine embassy officials in Riyadh not only refused to believe her, but also tricked her.

“Sabi nila mas madali akong mapapauwi kapag umamin ako (They said I could get home sooner if I confessed to the crime)," she told GMANews.TV in a phone interview.

“Gulung-gulo ako noon at gusto ko na talagang makauwi matapos ang nangyari sa akin, kaya um-oo na lang ako sa lahat ng sinabi nila (I was very confused and just wanted to go home after what had happened to me, so I agreed to everything they said.)," she added.

VP Binay lauds MalacaƱang's P1-billion loan fund for OFWs

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay on Tuesday praised President Benigno Aquino III for setting up a P1-billion loan fund for the benefit of returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

The idea of the fund is to provide capital and provide long-term employment to the returnees, so that for them working abroad will be a mere option and not a necessity.

Then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo first planted the seed of this program in several speeches during her term.

”This program is in line with the administration’s focus on alleviating poverty and providing gainful employment for our people. I am hopeful that in the long run, we will be able to provide gainful employment and economic opportunities,” said Binay, the concurrent Presidential Adviser on OFW Concerns.

In a related development, Binay has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to monitor closely the case of a group of alleged illegal recruiters arrested last week, including two British nationals and four Filipinos.

The suspects are currently detained at the office of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Camp Crame for possible charges of illegal recruitment and estafa. They were reportedly connected with the NSN Worldwide Advisers, Inc., a visa consultancy agency.

Speaking in Filipino, Binay told the PNP-CIDG “to be earnest with the assignment if only to show the Filipino people our strong stand against illegal recruitment.”

Binay received a CIDG briefer from seven complainants who alleged that they were recruited as caregivers and housekeepers in London with a salary of P100,000, complete with free hospitalization, free education for their dependents, and a United Kingdom immigrant status for their family after two years.

The suspects allegedly assured them of entry to the UK through a Tier 4 student visa. But the UK’s Border Agency (Immigration) turned down the visa applications because of nefarious documentation.

The detention of the suspects came barely a week after the UK approved limits to the number and qualifications of non-Europeans who can enter and work in the United Kingdom. The limits apparently included Filipinos.

POEA Warns Filipinos Of Bogus Jobs in Guam

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has recommended would-be Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW's) of potential entertainment work in Guam that does not exist.

“We received a report from the Philippine embassy advising POEA [Philippine Overseas Employment Administration] that this recruitment scams have been going on in the internet. These are advertisements posted in the internet...purportedly some hospitals in Guam are recruiting medical field workers, and 2 names have actually been mentioned,” said POEA Administrator Jennifer Manalili.

In a statement by the Philippine Consulate-General in Guam, there are sites that soliciting Filipino ofws to work in Guam. The two web site are guamgeneralhospital.com and westernpacifichospital.com.

The consulate said “Guam General Hospital” and “Western Pacific Hospital” are bogus.

“The online job solicitation is an apparent scam to lure unwary applicants into applying for jobs that does not exist,” the Philippine consulate said.

Guam authorities alerted the consulate that the websites are scams to lure OFWs to apply.

“We would suppose that some had already been victimized because the embassy said these are based on reports of some applicants having been lured into applying. We actually did come out with an advisory so we are able to warn the public that these are scams and these are not true offers of employment in Guam,” said Manalili.

The consulate added that the bogus websites are currently under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to the consulate, there is only one hospital in Guam, which is the Guam Memorial Hospital.

Manalili explained that the POEA is expecting the labor market in Guam to open on the 3rd quarter of 2011.

“What's being done there, the activities there would pertain to the awarding of contracts, and these are contracts not for the hospitals yet but mostly for housing facilities and road projects that have to be built before any other facilities can be constructed in Guam,” she said.

Furthermore, Manalili noted that internet scams have been proliferating on the world-wide-web. The bogus websites regularly operate by luring Overseas Filipino Workers to their site to fill up forms and are subsequently asked to remit money.

“When they ask you to remit money, then the applicant must be wary of the scheme because that would tell them something is amiss,” she said.

“The difficulty with scams is, of course, we don't know the origin, that's why we have been advising our public that when they see advertisements posted in the internet, they have to check the website of POEA because all of these information, they can verify from the website of POEA,” added Manalili.

Things You Should Know When Applying To Nursing Schools

Once you're making use of for a nursing college program, it could be helpful to check out both native campus packages and online nursing schools. Accredited nursing faculties present one of 4 levels like on-line RN-to-BSN, Bachelor's, Associate's, and Master of Science (MSN). Registered nurses are one of the fastest growing occupations within the United States, and you may want to apply for a nursing school program earlier than you can ever hope to get certification as a nurse and earn a lot of money in this profession.

Online nursing classes are provided by Chamberlain School of Nursing, Kaplan University, Saint Xavier College, and Loyola University. These four faculties comprise the top four online schools in the nation for providing nursing school training within the United States. There's a present shortage of registered nurses so you might need to begin out by getting an entry-degree nursing degree. There are three several types of entry-stage nursing levels, and each one is obtainable by a different nursing school. There's the 4-year BSN, 2-year Associate Diploma, and diploma. They are listed so as from highest demand to lowest in precedence, and having the one at the high of the listing can make sure you the best job placement. You may also take into account one of the numerous accelerated nursing diploma programs.

A BSN is required for a lot of jobs, and you can certify this by looking in your local newspaper. This is the first entry level for professional nursing practice within the United States. The 2-yr Affiliate Degree, on the other hand, concentrates extra technical abilities than concept, and this will allow college students to earn cash more shortly than they might otherwise. This is the entry-stage nursing program for technical nursing practice. The diploma was the extra frequent entry-level nursing program previous to the Nineteen Seventies, and there have been tons of of diploma colleges in existence at that time. There are actually lower than a hundred such colleges as a result of demand has gone down sharply. A nursing diploma can prepare students for work in a hospital or different inpatient facility. Relying on whether you may have sure career aspirations or not, this could seem limiting to you.

Several types of nursing college programs take place in different settings. The diploma is normally a 3-12 months program, the associates diploma is usually a 2-12 months program, and the Bachelor of Science is usually a 4-5 12 months program. The diploma is oftentimes located in a hospital that usually works with a neighborhood college. An associate's degree is usually located in a neighborhood school, and a Bachelor of Science (BSN) is often located in a university or university.

Selecting an entry-degree nursing program is a very private selection, and it will possibly take a while to make up your mind. It's usually finest to simply look via the job listings before applying for a nursing college program with the intention to take part in a nursing program that's extra amenable to your wants as a job seeker.

Nursing college programs are nothing with out the jobs that can comply with them so make your decision about applying for a nursing college program based mostly on the job that you count on to get. Otherwise, you may need a degree that provides you a sub-par job. Or, you may get a job that you simply won't have a good probability of being successful in.

POEA Warns Recruitment Agency Not To Charge Applicants Of Insurance Cost

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has warned licensed philippine recruitment agency not to charge candidates the cost of insurance coverage as a condition for the launched of their exit clearance or abroad employment certificates (OEC).

POEA Administrator Jennifer Jardin-Manalili reiterated that the cost of insurance protection for agency-hired OFWs must be paid by the deploying agency and shouldn't be handed on to the worker.

According to a POEA news launch, OFWs can report companies that violate the legislation to Manalili’s workplace directly.

Beneath Part 37-A of Republic Act (RA) 8042, as amended, any licensed recruitment/manning agency which passes on the cost of insurance coverage coverage to the worker, or uses such insurance protection as basis to claim any additional fee from the migrant employee shall lose its license and all its administrators, companions, proprietors, officers and workers shall be perpetually disqualified from partaking within the overseas recruitment business.

RA 10022 mandates that every newly-hired OFW deployed by licensed recruitment agencies should have insurance coverage protecting the following: accidental dying, pure death, permanent whole disablement, repatriation price, subsistence allowance benefit, cash claims arising from the employer’s legal responsibility, compassionate visit, medical evacuation and medical repatriation.

Direct hires and returning staff or balik-manggagawa are not covered by obligatory insurance coverage requirement.
